DeCora™ Clay Coated Residential Wallcover

Tools Required

  • Wallpaper adhesive
  • 9 to 11-in. deep well paint roller tray
  • 9 to 103/8-in. nap paint roller
  • 12 to 18-in. wallcover smoothing brush
  • 6-in. smoothing tool
  • Wallcover seam roller
  • Heavy-duty snap utility knife

Prepare the Wall

Measure and inspect the walls before installation. Confirm that you have enough material and that each surface is smooth, sound, and free from damage. Remove protruding nails, fill all holes, cracks and indentations with acrylic spackling compound, then sand the repaired or rough areas until smooth.

Clean the Wall

Clean the wall surface with a damp microfiber cloth or sponge using a mixture of warm water and vinegar. Remove all dust, dirt, mold, mildew, and stains. Allow the wall to dry completely before proceeding.

Prime the Wall

Apply a fresh coat of high quality primer, such as Roman's Pro-977 Ultra Primer, to promote adhesion between the wallcovering and the wall. Allow 48-72 hours for the primer to dry or as directed by the manufacturer, before continuing.

Plan the Installation

Measure the walls again before cutting or applying the material. Plan the pattern repeat and drop match so the design or graphics align as intended. Turn off the power to switches and outlets on the installation walls then remove the cover plates. Using a laser level or a plumb bob, draw a vertical guideline for the first panel.

Apply the Adhesive

DeCora is a very open and breathable wallcovering substrate. It is designed to work with both the traditional paste-the-backing or the paste-the-wall method of installation. Use a high-quality adhesive, such as Roman's Pro-880 Ultra Clear Strippable or Pro-774 Clay

Apply Adhesive continued

Paste-the-Backing Method

Pour the adhesive into the paint tray and apply liberally to the backing with a 3/8" nap roller.

  • Place the panel face down on a clean dry table or pasting board.
  • Apply the adhesive evenly to the upper half of the panel.
  • Gently fold the pasted surface onto itself without creating a hard crease.
  • Rotate the panel, apply adhesive to the lower half, and repeat the folding process.
  • Fold both ends to the center and allow the panel to rest for 10 minutes before installing, unless otherwise specified by the adhesive manufacture.

Paste-the-Wall Method

  • Roll an even layer of paste onto the wall, covering an area slightly larger than the width of a panel

Install and Trim the Panel

Using the vertical guideline that you created for positioning the fist panel on the wall.

Paste-the-Backing Method

  • Unfold the upper half of the panel and align its edge with the guideline.
  • Using the smoothing brush, work from the center toward the edges to secure the panel to the wall.
  • Press firmly enough to remove trapped air without forcing adhesive from beneath the panel.
  • Unfold and install the lower half of the panel using the same method.
  • Use your 6-in.smoothing tool to gently push the panel up and into the ceiling and down into your baseboard lines.
  • Trim each panel at the ceiling and baseboard line with a sharp snap blade tip. Remember to use a new blade tip for each cut!

Paste-the-Wall Method

  • Lay the panel on the wall and align its edge with the guideline.
  • Using the smoothing brush, work from the top down and center out to the edges to secure the panel to the wall.
  • Press firmly enough to remove trapped air without forcing adhesive from beneath the panel.
  • Then follow the setting and trimming directions above.
