Tools Required
- 12 to 18-in. wallcover smoothing brush
- 6-in. felt lined squeegee tool
- (optional) 3-in. wide x 1 1/2-in. diameter rubber laminate roller
- Heavy-duty snap utility knife
Prepare the Wall
Measure and inspect the walls before installation. Confirm that you have enough material and that each surface is smooth, sound, and free from damage. Remove protruding nails, fill all holes, cracks and indentations with acrylic spackling compound, then sand the repaired or rough areas until smooth.
Clean the Wall
Clean the wall surface with a damp microfiber cloth or sponge using a mixture of warm water and vinegar. Remove all dust, dirt, mold, mildew, and stains. Allow the wall to dry completely before proceeding.
Prime the Wall
Apply a fresh coat of high quality primer, such as Roman's Pro-977 Ultra Primer, to promote adhesion between the wallcovering and the wall. Allow 48-72 hours for the primer to dry or as directed by the manufacturer, before continuing.
Plan the Installation
Measure the walls again before cutting or applying the material. Plan the pattern repeat and drop match so the design or graphics align as intended. Turn off the power to switches and outlets on the installation walls then remove the cover plates. Using a laser level or a plumb bob, draw a vertical guideline for the first panel.
Install and Trim the Panel
Using the vertical guideline that you created for positioning the fist panel on the wall.
Starting at the top-left corner of the panel, peel back approximately twenty-four inches of the liner from the printed wallcovering panel.
- Align the panel’s right edge with the vertical guideline you created, then gently press the adhesive surface onto the wall.
- Using a smoothing brush or squeegee, work from the center toward the edges to secure the panel to the wall.
- Apply enough pressure with the squeegee or brush to remove trapped air without overstressing the printed panel.
- Repeat these steps in 24-inch increments as you work down the panel until you have secured the panel the wall.
- Use a 6-inch smoothing tool to gently press the panel into the ceiling and baseboard lines.
- Trim each panel along the ceiling and baseboard lines with a sharp snap-off blade. Use a fresh blade tip for every cut. Pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) products can quickly dull or clog a blade, so snap off the used tip after each cut.
- PSA products are typically designed with a 1- to 2-inch overlap at each seam. When installing subsequent panels, use light pressure in the overlap area until you have confirmed proper alignment. Then continue the installation in 24-inch increments as described above.
- After the installation is complete, go over each seam with a squeegee or the optional 3-inch rubber roller to ensure a tight, secure bond.
- Finally, stand back and enjoy your finished project. Wallcovering adds color and dimension to any room!
