The Rise of PVC-Free Wallcovering in Commercial Interiors: What Architects and Interior Designers Need to Know
Written for the people who put wallcovering on a drawing: what changes in the specification when the vinyl comes out.
September 29, 2026

Designers have been specifying wallcovering for a century. What has changed in the last few years is not the aesthetic ambition — it is that the materials schedule is now read by people outside the design team: sustainability consultants, corporate real estate, hotel groups with their own standards, healthcare estates teams.
PVC-free wallcovering is rising because it survives that wider readership.
What the term does and does not promise
PVC-free means polyvinyl chloride is absent from the construction. When it is meant properly, that means the face, the coating and the backing — not just the printed surface.
It does not, by itself, promise recyclability, a fire classification, a VOC result or a durability class. Those are separate claims requiring separate evidence. Treating PVC-free as shorthand for "environmentally approved" is the mistake that gets a spec challenged later. Ask for each claim you need, individually.
The three finishes worth knowing
Most commercial digital-print work sits on one of three substrates, and the choice reads differently in a room:
- Smooth nonwoven — the workhorse for murals and full-wall imagery. A calm, even surface that lets a photographic image do the talking.
- Clay-coated — chosen where colour depth and fine detail matter at close viewing distance, such as a feature wall you stand next to.
- Peel-and-stick — for graphics with a known end date, or walls that will be refreshed on a short cycle. Repositionable during install and designed to come away cleanly.
Practical notes for a spec package
- Name the substrate, not just the look. A printer given only an image will choose the material for you.
- Decide the protective coat up front if the wall is in a contact area — it changes the surface and the price.
- Think about removal at the start. Refresh cycles in hospitality and retail are short; a wall that strips cleanly saves the next fit-out's budget.
- Check the print provider's press and width against the wall's dimensions to control seam positions.
- Keep sustainability language precise in the specification. Write PVC-free where you mean PVC-free.
On "best PVC-free wallcovering brands"
There is no single best; there is best for the job. What separates suppliers usefully is whether they will tell you plainly what a material is made of, whether they will give you enough of it to test properly, and whether they have an interest in the outcome beyond selling you a roll.
We manufacture 100% PVC-free printable wallcovering and we do not print. That is deliberate: your print provider stays yours, and our advice on which finish suits your wall costs us nothing to give honestly.
For your next materials schedule: request samples for the design library, or book a virtual demo and bring the project team.
