What “100% PVC-free” actually means on a wallcovering spec
PVC-free is one of the most used and least explained phrases in wide-format print. Here is exactly what it means when we say it.
August 4, 2026

PVC — polyvinyl chloride — has been the default plastic in printable wallcovering and banner media for decades. It is cheap, it takes ink well, and it is durable. It is also a chlorinated plastic that usually needs plasticisers to stay flexible, and it is difficult to recycle through ordinary waste streams.
When we say our media is 100% PVC-free, we mean one specific thing: there is no polyvinyl chloride anywhere in the product. Not in the face, not in the coating, not in the backing.
What follows from that
- No PVC means no PVC plasticisers, so nothing has to migrate out of the sheet over time to keep it flexible.
- No chlorinated plastic in the material means no chlorinated plastic in the offcuts, the trim or the sheet you strip off a wall in five years.
- The material behaves like what it is — a paper or nonwoven substrate — which is why installation and removal feel different to vinyl.
What “PVC-free” does not automatically mean
This is where specifications go wrong. PVC-free is a statement about one material being absent. It is not, on its own, a claim about anything else. Three separate things get conflated:
- PVC-free — no polyvinyl chloride in the product.
- Recyclable — the material can be collected and reprocessed, which depends on local facilities as much as on the sheet.
- Low-VOC — a statement about emissions from the finished, printed, installed graphic, which depends heavily on the ink and the press, not only on the media.
A product can be any one of those without being the others. Ours is PVC-free by design, and we say so precisely rather than folding it into a general claim of being green.
How to write it into a spec
Name the requirement rather than the mood. “Wallcovering substrate to contain no polyvinyl chloride” is auditable. “Eco-friendly wallcovering” is not, and it lets a PVC product with a recycled backing satisfy the line.
We manufacture and supply the media. We are not a digital printing company — your print provider runs our substrates on their own press, with their own inks.
